Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is a shot timer?

A shot timer is basically just a more practical stopwatch. Some people also call it a Barista Timer or Shot Clock, but it means the same thing. As soon as you start a shot on your espresso machine, the timer counts the seconds so you can see how long the extraction has been running. A good rule of thumb is that an espresso should run in about 25-30 seconds, and a timer simply makes that easier to control. That way, you can quickly grab the milk from the fridge instead of counting in your head.

Who is behind doppio?

We are Philipp and Alex, and we have been friends since elementary school. Because we were missing a shot timer on our own machines (Bezzera Magica - Alex / Lelit Mara X - Philipp), we simply developed one ourselves. Philipp takes care of the entire infrastructure, while Alex is mainly responsible for the technical side.

How can I pay?

Our payment provider accepts all major credit cards, Apple and Google Pay, PayPal, Klarna and bank transfers.

Can I test the timer?

If you live in Germany, you can order your timer and test it for 30 days. If you don't like it, we'll cover the return shipping. Unfortunately we cannot cover return shipping from other countries due to high costs.

Does the timer work with my machine?

The timer has already been successfully tested on the following machines. We are very confident it will work on yours as well. If your espresso machine isn't listed, feel free to ask or try it yourself—returns are free if it doesn't work (valid within Germany).

  • Bezzera BZ10
  • Bezzera Magica
  • DeLonghi Dedica
  • ECM Electronika
  • ECM Mechanika
  • Elektra Verve Mini
  • La Marzocco Linea Micra
  • La Marzocco Linea Mini
  • Lelit Anita
  • Lelit Mara X
  • Quickmill Cassiopeia
  • Rancilio Silvia
  • Rocket Appartamento

How does the timer start and stop?

The timer automatically detects the start of your shot via the pump's vibration. When you stop the shot and thus the pump, the timer stops as well.

How long does the time stay displayed after the shot ends?

After you finish the shot, the timer continues to show the duration for 10 seconds. Afterwards the screen turns off and resets itself.

Does the timer need to stay plugged in all the time?

Yes, since the timer has no built-in battery, it must remain powered at all times.

What is included in the delivery?

Besides the timer itself, you receive two spare adhesive tapes so you can reposition the timer. If you'd like a nice braided cable, you can order one directly. A power adapter is not included.

When will a variant be available again?

If you want a particular variant that's currently sold out, please contact Alex (alex@yawn-labs.com) or Philipp (philipp@yawn-labs.com). We'll do our best to get your desired timer back in stock quickly.

Can I order a custom-made version?

Certain modifications are generally possible. Just get in touch with Alex (alex@yawn-labs.com) or Philipp (philipp@yawn-labs.com) with your request. Please understand that custom builds are more expensive to cover our extra work.

How do I install the shot timer?

First, remove the film from the attached double-sided nano tape and stick the timer to your desired side—right or left. Orientation doesn't matter; the display adjusts itself based on how you mount it. Then plug the timer into a power source using a USB-C cable. Done! If the numbers appear upside down, briefly disconnect it from power and plug it back in to perform a reset.

Why isn't there walnut wood?

Walnut is unfortunately too dark and obscures the display behind it. However, mahogany looks almost identical and we're sure you'll be just as happy with it.

How reliable is the timer?

Reliable detection was extremely important to us. The timer recognizes the start of the shot every time, even if you're just flushing. If you end the shot in under 20 seconds, it automatically resets without locking the time display so you can start the real shot without waiting. Handling the portafilter (e.g., inserting the basket) sometimes produces vibrations similar to the pump, so the timer may briefly start counting. It notices quickly and stops on its own. If you don't like the sensitivity, just contact us and we'll try to push a software update.

What is the difference between open front and chrome?

With the open front you can see the individual LEDs of the matrix display directly. With chrome there is a thin film in between that reflects and matches the look of your chrome-plated espresso machine very closely.

Why is (international) shipping so expensive?

We ship exclusively with DHL to ensure smooth delivery. We pass the costs directly on to you. Unfortunately, because of our small shipment volumes, we don't get any special deals. If you buy more timers, hopefully we can make shipping cheaper soon!
